Wellness comes in many forms, and as might be expected, there are probably almost as many factors that contribute to wellness as there are people. It's certainly not just a matter of following a particular diet, getting a certain amount of exercise, or hitting the hay for the same amount of sleep each night. Plenty of factors can contribute to wellness, and savvy companies — and plan providers — are looking at ways that might seem a little off the beaten track. Too-regimented "solutions" that reduce everything to the least common denominator probably don't help anywhere near as much as sponsors and providers hope they will; after all, people are unique. And some recent studies have shown that wellness programs aren't really driving much change in employee behavior, particularly since the people who seem to be taking the most advantage of them are the people who are already the most interested in gym memberships, healthy diets and regular checkups. But that doesn't mean they can't make a difference. The key is to tune in to what employees really care about and make that a part of their wellness plan.
