Hail can cause serious property damage to vehicles, roofs and structures, and can result in hefty claims payouts. For insurers and property owners, knowing where and how often these hail loss claims occur can help mitigate the risk of this weather event. Recently, the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) released a three-year analysis of insurance claims associated with hail storms in the United States, calculating the total hail loss claims in that period and identifying which states had the highest number of claims. From January 1, 2016, through December 31, 2018, there were a total of 2,891,291 hail loss claims, according to claims data from ISO ClaimSearch. Pertinent to insurers, of the five policy types providing hail loss coverage, personal property-homeowners insurance was the most affected, making up 57% of the three-year total with 1,657,663 claims. The second was personal auto insurance with 898,500 claims, followed by personal property–farm with 149,215 claims. May was the worst month for hail loss claims, the NICB found, with a monthly average of 203,296. Spring and summer months followed, with June (178,881), April (164,232), March (153,716) and July (96,947) making up the top five. Some states are subject to significantly higher hail risk. In the slideshow above, find the top 5 states for hail loss claims and their individual claims total over a three-year span. See also: |
