For many music lovers, there's nothing quite like an outdoor summer concert, tailgating with friends in an arena parking lot and enjoying your favorite live performers in an open, freestanding setting on a warm summer night. Music festival season is also a particularly popular summer highlight, gathering tens of thousands of fans in large open, outdoor venues for weekend-long events. But as we have tragically seen in recent years, these kinds of events of such large public assembly can be the site of unimaginable disaster. Experts with the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) have put forth safety tips for places of public assembly, whether it be music festivals, shows or just your average day in the office, where danger could foster at any time from extreme weather, fire or in the most extreme circumstance, a planned attack. Events like the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing and the nightmarish 2017 Las Vegas shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival demonstrated how places of public gathering can be a target for the most inhumane acts of violence and destruction. In scenarios like these, adequate emergency planning and prepared safety measures can be the difference between life and death. In the slideshow above, review advice from the NFPA on safety in places of public assembly, outlining 5 tips to stay safe during summer festivals. Related: Insuring mass shooting events
