FM Global releases 2019 FM Global Resilience Index, ranking 130 countries
FM Global's Resilience Index rankings of 130 countries are based on 12 economic, risk and supply chain-related measures.
The annual FM Global Resilience Index ranks 130 countries and territories based on the resilience of their business environments. The rankings are based on 12 economic, risk and supply chain-related measures driving the 2019 FM Global Resilience Index rankings. New this year, the 2019 edition includes a new driver to its ranking scale: corporate governance.
FM Global says their annual Resilience Index is designed to help chief financial officers and other business leaders “choose resilience” as they manage their own risk, site facilities, extend supply chains and cultivate customers. From their experience. FM Global says that a lack of resilience can have broad, long-lasting effects on business value and performance.
“Resilience is critical for CFOs as trade conflicts, weakening economies, national elections, Brexit and evolving climate risks prompt companies to rethink their locations and partners,” Kevin Ingram, executive vice president and chief financial officer at FM Global said in a statement.
“We believe resilience is a choice that industry leaders make, and the Index gives executives one more tool with which to make good decisions about their futures.”
Top 10 rankings
While the 2019 top 10 rankings saw a shakeup of the most resilient countries historically, Norway retained their position in the number-one slot. Following Norway in the top 10 are Denmark (ranked 2nd), Switzerland (3rd), Germany (4th), Finland (5th), Sweden (6th), Luxembourg (7th), Austria (8th), Central United States (9th) and the United Kingdom (10th).
Notably, the United States is viewed as three regions in the Index because of their varying exposures to natural hazards. The Eastern region comes in 11th, and the Western region comes in 22nd.
The bottom three countries in the Index are the same as the previous year: Ethiopia (128th), Venezuela (129th) and Haiti (130th).
FM Global’s Index rankings are based on 12 factors: productivity, exposure to natural hazards, control of corruption, political risk, natural hazard risk quality, quality of infrastructure, oil intensity, fire risk quality, corporate governance, urbanization rate, inherent cyber risk and supply chain visibility.
