May is probably best known for Mother's Day, followed by Memorial Day and college graduations. It's also Military Appreciation Month, a time for many Americans who have little or no personal connection to the armed forces to recognize military members — and their spouses — for what they give to the country. What better way to appreciate veterans than to help them find jobs in the civilian world? The insurance industry is a good one for former service members with its wide range of opportunities across the United States. Military Times, the publication most widely read by service members and their families, annually ranks employers as "Best for Vets," and the 2019 list includes 100 organizations across more than 30 industries. Military Times invited companies across the U.S. to take part in its extensive survey asking questions about recruiting people connected to the military; company policies related to veterans, reservists and their families; and the organization's culture. Only organizations that did well in the evaluation were included in the 2019 list of 100 best for vets. Related: U.S. Army veteran Robert Klinger's journey to building a successful insurance agency George Altman, a writer for Military Times, noted that a record number of companies and other organizations — about 190 — completed surveys to try to earn a place in the 2019 Best for Vets: Employers rankings. Nearly 200 U.S. employers — a record number — competed for a spot in this year's rankings, providing in-depth data on their culture, recruiting, policies and resources related to veterans, service members and military families. Questions related to company culture and military recruiting each accounted for about 35% of the evaluation, while reservist policies made up 17% and military-related policies accounted for about 14%.
