CSAA Insurance Group, an AAA insurer, recorded an employee volunteerism rate of 100% in 2018, achieving the highest employee volunteer participation rate in the United States by a company with 3,000 or more employees for the fourth consecutive year. In 2018, more than 3,800 CSAA employees volunteered 47,045 hours of time at more than 600 events across the country.

CSAA Insurance Group worked to increase employee volunteerism rates beginning in 2012 with the ultimate goal of reaching 80%. By 2015, the company achieved 98%; in 2017, they reached 99%. Last year represents the first time the company reached a 100% volunteerism rate.

Each year, the company promotes 600 company-supported projects with nonprofit organizations. The insurer also offers independent volunteer hours to allow all employees to participate.

To help promote community involvement, CSAA offers employees 24 hours of paid time off to volunteer each year. Employees only have to volunteer a minimum of one hour to be included in the total percentage of volunteers.

The power of volunteer work

To further study the impact of its corporate volunteerism program, CSAA Insurance Group partnered with VeraWorks, a global consulting firm that helps companies incorporate societal good into their business strategies.

Study results suggest that survey respondents who participated in volunteer activities over a six-month period experienced an uptick in engagement, and those who didn’t participate experienced a decrease. The program also appears to create new volunteers as one out of six participants volunteered for the first time through CSAA Insurance Group.

“Our goal is not to continue hitting 100%,” says Vanessa Chan, senior manager of community affairs at CSAA Insurance Group. “It’s really to support our employees and their passion and commitment to volunteerism.”
