With consumers gearing up for Cyber Monday, it's important to know about the serious cyber risks of online shopping, which includes such threats as identity theft, fraudulent activity, and even home security system hacking. According to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) and J.D. Power's 2018 Consumer Cyber Insurance and Security Spotlight Survey, more than four out of five American consumers who own connected devices either lack insurance to protect them from cyber threats or do not know if they are covered. More than 75% of survey respondents said they don't plan to pay more for cyber risk coverage. Cyber attacks and breaches have grown exponentially, with breaches hitting a record 1,579 in 2017, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center, exposing about 179 million personal records. I.I.I. wants to remind consumers to check their policies ahead of the holiday season to avoid any breaches in cybersecurity. Here are tips for consumers to better protect themselves from serious threats posed by Cyber Monday shopping.
