Although October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, cybersecurity is increasingly becoming part of everyday discussions throughout the U.S. From the 2016 election to the numerous scandals plaguing Facebook, cybersecurity should be a concern for anyone who uses internet-connected devices. Despite this, most users don't seem to be concerned. According to the Insurance Information Institute and J.D. Power 2018 Consumer Cyber Insurance and Security Spotlight Survey, six out of 10 people who own connected technology said they don't have privacy or cybersecurity concerns related to their connected devices. As misconceptions about cybersecurity continue to fester, the insurance industry has a golden opportunity to step in and enlighten unconcerned individuals. Whether it's explaining the various types of cyber attacks used by cybercriminals or breaking down the importance of cyber insurance coverage, actively changing the dialogue around cybersecurity will be critical going forward. No one is truly immune from a cyber attack — whether it's an individual, a small, family-owned business or a Fortune 500 company — so take time this October to understand the ever-changing cyber landscape.
