This summer, major wildfires have burned out of control in California and across the western United States, as well as in Germany, Greece, Spain and Sweden. About 5.4 million acres have been blackened in more than a dozen U.S. states during this year's extremely active wildfire season, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Summer vacation travelers have likely had their getaway plans disrupted. Firefighters across California — a popular vacation destination — continue to battle at least 17 wildfires.
