House GOP to add $81 billion disaster package to stopgap funding

The strategy makes an end run around House Democrats who say they were shut out of the final crafting of the disaster package.

(Bloomberg) – House Republican leaders will add $81 billion in hurricane and wildfire recovery aid to a temporary spending bill needed to keep the government open after Friday, as lawmakers in the Senate cobble together their own package to avert a partial federal shutdown.

The strategy makes an end run around House Democrats who say they were shut out of the final crafting of the disaster package, but depends on Speaker Paul Ryan being able to convince enough fiscal conservatives to support the plan. The initial signs were positive in the House.
