Mobile homes — A unique insurance exposure

Many mobile homes were destroyed by the recent hurricanes, and they have specific coverage issues. Here are some things that agents and brokers need to know.

The recent hurricanes have brought mobile homes to the forefront of peoples’ attention because of the number of trailer parks and mobile homes in Florida, Georgia and Texas.

According to the Manufactured Housing Institute, Florida has about 828,000 mobile homes  — more than any other state. As reported by the Washington Post, about 600,000 are older models, not constructed to withstand hurricane-level winds, and only half of the state’s mobile homes are insured.
