Happy hurricane season! Well, it'll be happy for homeowners if the season stays relatively calm.
The 2017 hurricane season is expected to get off to a slow start. The CSU Tropical Meteorology Project team is predicting 11 named storms during the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30. Of those, researchers expect four to become hurricanes and two to reach major hurricane strength (Saffir/Simpson category 3-4-5) with sustained winds of 111 miles per hour or greater.
Similarly, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting 11 to 17 named storms, of which five to nine could become hurricanes this season. AccuWeather Inc. says there could be 19 named storms, 10 hurricanes and seven major systems in this year.
Unfortunately, there's no way to know for sure what a hurricane season will end up playing out. That's why the American Insurance Association (AIA) has issued four tips for homeowners to protect their property and valuables in the event of a storm. According to AIA, now is the time to prepare. See the tips in the infographic below .
