Insurance carriers, as part of a service industry, differentiate themselves from one another in their product structure, service offerings to agents and insureds, processes, and systems of distribution.

Insurance is such a diverse industry that specialization and market distinction are essential to gaining competitive advantage.

That said, the demand for insurer uniqueness can clash with the fact that insurance is the most evolved, standardized, and actively engaged in technological advancement, of any non-IT industry.
