The Hartford has released its ranking of the top 100 U.S. cities with the highest home fire risk, as ranked by the insurer’s Home Fire Index. The index is based on an analysis of the U.S. Fire Administration’s National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and a survey conducted by The Hartford on fire safety and prevention behaviors among the general population.

The Hartford's findings also includes the top occurances of home fires, like the day after Independence Day (thanks to fireworks), and the top sources of home fires, like candles.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a home fire is reported in the U.S. every 86 seconds, and 33 percent of home fires are started by children aged 6 to 9. With this in mind, The Hartford has committed to donate $2 million to local school districts and fire departments for fire safety education.

Additionally, The Hartford will provide educational material to 1.5 million children in kindergarten through third grade. The funding and resources of the material will go to the 100 cities listed in The Hartford’s Home Fire Index for being the most at-risk for home fires.

See the top 100 cities, as well as more stats from The Hartford’s survey and some history on its 70-year-old Junior Fire Marshal program, in the infographic below.
