New Year's celebrations vary throughout the world, from eating lentils in Italy and Brazil to smashing China on friends' front doors in Denmark.

In the U.S., parties, fireworks, champagne and watching the ball drop New York City's Times Square are all customary celebrations to ring in the new year. With these customs, however, come risks.

According to Washington-based WalletHub, New Year's Eve is the number one night of the year for celebratory gunfire. New Year's Eve is also “the most drunken night of the year,” with the average American blood alcohol content measuring 0.094 percent (the legal limit for drivers over the age of 21 is 0.08 percent).

Big holiday for auto insurers

New Year's Eve is also a big holiday for auto insurers: According to WalletHub, New Year's Eve is the second most popular day of the year for auto theft, with 2,227 vehicles reported stolen. WalletHub also reports that over 40,000 people are injured in auto accidents and over 340 fatalities occur each New Year's Eve/Day.
