The National Association of Insurance Commissioners has hired Michael Consedine, a former Pennsylvania insurance commissioner, to be its next chief executive officer.
The Kansas City, Missouri-based insurance regulator group says Consedine will take over as CEO in early 2017. He will work in the NAIC's Washington office.
Consedine is on track to succeed Andy Beal, the acting CEO. Ben Nelson, a Democrat who represented Nebraska in the Senate from 2001 through 2013, was the NAIC's last permanent CEO. Nelson stepped down from that post in early 2015.
Consedine has been the head of government affairs at Transamerica, a large, U.S.-based arm of Aegon N.V., since February 2015. He took charge of Aegon's global government and policy affairs operation in August. Aegon has its headquarters in the Hague, Netherlands. The company has some operations in the United Kingdom, and that has given the company a stake in the United Kingdom effort to leave the European Union.
Consedine earned a bachelor's degree in political science and journalism from James Madison University in 1991, and he earned a law degree from Widener University in 1994.
Consedine worked as a department counsel in the Pennsylvania Department of Insurance from 1995 through 1999, then spent 12 years as a partner and vice chair of the insurance practice group in the Philadelphia office of Saul Ewing LLP.
Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett, a Republican, named Consedine insurance commissioner in 2011. Consedine served as commissioner until January 2015, when Tom Wolf, a Democrat, became governor.
While Consedine was an insurance commissioner, he served in the NAIC as secretary/treasurer, vice president and president-elect.
The NAIC has a friendly rivalry with the Manasquan, New Jersey-based National Conference of Insurance Legislators, a group for state lawmakers with an interest in insurance. The chief executive officer of NCOIL is Thomas Considine, a former New Jersey insurance commissioner.
Genealogists believe that most members of the Considine and Consedine families are descended from Ireland's Mac Consaidin family. Michael Consedine and Thomas Considine are not aware of any recent family connections, according to an NCOIL representative.
