The Alexandria, Va.-based Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America's Young Agents Committee said it raised more than $47,000 this year for InVEST, a financial literacy program that educates high school and college students about insurance, risk management and financial services.

The money was raised through a Roaring '20s-themed fundraising event in conjunction with the insurance organization's Legislative Conference and the annual InVEST silent and live auction.

“Young agents want to make a difference in the insurance industry and the InVEST Scholarship fund is an important part of the perpetuation solution,” says Boyd McGehee, the national chairman of Young Agents Committee and president of Talladega Insurance in Talladega, Ala. “By hosting this fundraiser, we help future independent agents, the next generation of (customer service representatives), producers and principals find a rewarding and exciting career in insurance.”

The Young Agents Committee raised $47,095 from the fundraising event, auction and direct contributions. Auction items were donated by insurance carriers, agents and brokers, the IIABA and its state affiliates, and other industry organizations and supporters, the committee said.

“The continuing success of the InVEST program is critical to the future of the independent agency system and the insurance industry as a whole. We are grateful and inspired by the generosity and dedication of our young leaders,” said Robert Rusbuldt, IIABA president and chief executive officer.

The InVEST program, which is based in Alexandria, Va., seeks to attract new talent to the insurance industry, and is currently in more than 700 college and high schools across the country. The nonprofit is supported by insurance organizations, agencies, brokers and volunteers.
