After the excitement of buying a new home wears off, the reality of having the right insurance coverage sets in. It’s the largest investment most people will make, and they want to know something about the insurance companies that they’re dealing with.

To help potential buyers choose a carrier, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners recently ranked the top 25 Homeowners' insurance companies and groups by market share of direct premiums written for 2015.

Direct premiums written among the top 25 providers totaled $89 billion, compared with $86.7 billion in 2014. The Top 10 providers accounted for 61.14% of 2015 direct premiums written.

The names in the Top 10 Homeowners' carriers remained the same as 2014, and in the same order, although the total of direct premiums written and market share changed incrementally.

The top four carriers had a market share of 41.23%, almost equal to the market share of 41.78% among the top four during 2014.

State Farm held its No. 1 position again in 2015 with $17.5 billion in direct premiums written, representing a market share of 19.67%, a slight drop of 0.67 percentage points, but still the market leader by $10 billion more than Allstate, in the number two spot. State Farm topped the 2014 list as well, with a market share of 20.34%.
