(Bloomberg) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck deep underground about 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) off Japan, causing tremors in Tokyo and power outages.
The quake centered off Japan’s Ogasawara islands struck at 8:24 p.m. local time at a depth of 590 kilometers, according to the Meteorological Agency. No tsunami warning was issued. The agency reported an earlier preliminary magnitude reading of 8.5.
Two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries though there were no reports of major damage, the Associated Press said. The temblor was felt across most of Japan’s largest island of Honshu.
Trains in central Tokyo were halted after the shaking as were some Shinkansen bullet trains, according to Kyodo news. About 400 houses in Saitama prefecture north of Tokyo lost power, AP said, citing Tokyo Electric Power Co.
The quake follows the eruption of a volcano off southern Japan yesterday that forced the evacuation of about 140 people.
