Arianna Huffington, president and editor-in-chief of Huffington Post Media Group, delivered the closing keynote for RIMS 2015 on Wednesday to a room packed with risk professionals. Her message was clear: Get more sleep.
Huffington promoted her new book, Thrive, in which she recounts her personal journey with discovering the importance of getting an appropriate amount of sleep. Huffington spoke of how she overworked herself to the point of exhaustion, leading to an eventual "crash and burn." What she learned from the experience is that taking care of oneself will lead to great success in life.
Huffington compared getting the right amount of sleep to an oxygen mask dropping in an airplane. Safety regulations instruct passengers to put their own mask on first before helping those around them. Huffington says the same goes for sleep: When you're at your best, you're better able to help and work with those around you.
She also spoke about how we as a society have become addicted to technology. She recommended disconnecting oneself from their device, at least when it's time to sleep. Many of us are in the habit of keeping our phones near our beds, which we tend to look at in the middle of the night. Huffington recommended putting your phone on silent at night and keeping it away from the bed. She also suggested a game for friends to play when going out to eat together: Everyone puts their phone in the middle of the table, and whoever checks theirs first has to pay the bill.
Huffington then took questions from the audience, who were eager to hear her suggestions for dealing with their own stress and helping loved ones dealing with similar issues. Her keynote concluded with a standing ovation from RIMS 2015 attendees.
