I am honored to join the founding Board of Directors for the Georgia Chapter of the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation's (IICF) Southeast division.

The foundation helps communities and enriches lives by uniting the collective strengths of the industry to provide grants, volunteer service and leadership experience. Since its inception in 1994, the IICF has contributed more than $23.5 million in charitable grants and nearly 200,000 volunteer hours to hundreds of community nonprofit organizations across the U.S.

The fact of the matter is, the positive impact that the insurance industry has on the communities it serves is understated at best

That's where IICF comes in—to bring together the efforts of the industry to grow the positive impact of charitable works. For example, during the October 2014 Week of Giving, more than 5,300 insurance industry volunteers from 87 cities across 21 states provided more than 14,500 hours of service to community nonprofits. IICF turns passionate industry competitors into equally passionate partners in philanthropy. The companies that work through IICF are not doing it to improve their company profiles or brands. They are simply doing the right thing.

The IICF operates on a local and regional level throughout four divisions—Northeast, Texas-Southeast, Midwest and West—to make an impact as one. All funds are reinvested within the same region in which they were raised (through benefit dinners and other fundraising activities).

Further, on a national scale, IICF's Early Literacy Initiative aims to provide every young child in America the opportunity to learn to read and write. Through hosting unique programs and leveraging the expansive IICF network of insurance industry professionals, we can reach millions of families and young children. Helping to close the literacy gap in America and provide the next generation with the literacy toolkit so vital to future success is an IICF and industry-wide priority.

The first program of the IICF's Early Literacy Initiative is a creative partnership with Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind “Sesame Street.” This early literacy program, formally launched in October 2013, is called Every Day is a Reading and Writing Day (learn more at www.iicf.org/literacy). The innovative and research-based literacy program provided by Sesame Workshop creates impactful and meaningful experiences for children, parents and caregivers alike.
