Pets Best Insurance Services recently released lists of the top 10 states for dog insurance and the top 10 states for cat insurance. Among the states with the most policies written for both species are New York, Texas, and Colorado.

Pet insurance is increasingly becoming a popular option in the U.S., according to the pet insurance agency. Caring for pets can get expensive, especially when they experience an emergency illness or accident that can land them in the vet's office. An insurance policy helps cover the costs that pet owners typically pay out-of-pocket.

Pets Best analyzed the number of dogs and cats insured with the agency in 2013 and separated them into the states they reside, ranking the top 10 states with the most insured pets.

The infographic below shows the top 10 states for each category.

The states with the lowest dog enrollment in 2013 included Wyoming, South Dakota and North Dakota. The states with the fewest cat policies were South Dakota, Montana and Vermont.

Despite being available in the U.S. for more than 30 years, an estimated 3% of dog owners and 1% of cat owners in the U.S. have pet insurance, according to the American Pet Products Association's 2009-2010 National Pet Owners Survey. This stat is much lower than other countries. For example, in the UK 54% of dogs and 34% of cats had pet insurance in 2012, according to data from economic and business research firm Timetric.
