During Turnstone's Millennials in the Workplace discussion at Impact HUB, a panel of young business leaders suggested recruiting and inspiring leadership and mentorship in the workforce, as well as providing the opportunity for professional and personal growth is essential in retaining millennials in the workplace.
Internships have become more important in breaking into an industry. Interns and new workers are looking to gain professional experience, but also connect with the companies. However, when young workers begin requesting “me time,” they can come off as demanding to their superiors.
CEO and co-founder of buuteeq Forest Kay said that millennials just need the opportunity to learn. “Overly ambitious millennials don't always know that they don't know something, and to a lot of people, that turns into (perceiving) someone as egotistical. But if you declare knowledge of something and you don't actually have it, it can be problematic in a professional setting.”
Managing the younger worker requires a better framework to support the needs of new employees. Although millennials enter the workforce with less specialized skill, companies can engage with those employees to allow for personal growth while also becoming an asset to the company, especially since young professionals are more apt to take on new projects, such as learning a computer program, which may be daunting to more established workers.
