How can Employers retain young talent?
Employers can retain young talent by providing opportunities and incentives for the young employees. A young employee should feel that they are compensated for their hard work and have an opportunity to grow within their organization.

How did you determine that insurance was a viable career choice?
I look out the window of my agency and I see personal auto and business owners' policies that will renew every year. I can't think of another business that relates to everything. I challenge you to think of something that doesn't need insurance? I want to buy a new watch, car and house, but I need insurance.

Who do you look toward as a mentor in this industry?
Charles Edward Hilson is my mentor and hero in this industry. I would not have the pleasure of working in this industry without Mr. Hilson's guidance and support. Mr. Hilson has over 30 years of experience in the insurance industry and is the best Insurance Agent that I have worked with in my career.

What are your future goals in this industry?
My future goals include Illinois having the highest school participation for the InVEST program in the nation and helping to influence students to select Insurance as their top career choice.

What skills do you think young agents will need next year?
I believe that Young Agents need to have good customer service and computer skills. Providing good service to your clients is a positive outlook for your organization and staff. Often clients that receive good service will continue to renew their business and provide referrals. I encourage you to go the extra step to learn your computer operating system. Most organizations are looking for computer specialists to help troubleshoot or increase the time efficiency of their office.

What are some of your career highlights?
One of my career highlights is speaking to Whitney Young High School about the InVEST program this year. I enjoy seeing the light turn on when the students understand the potential of our industry. Another career highlight is when I won the Young Agent of the Year Award for 2011. It feels good to have the respect and appreciation of the industry.

Michael Charles-Hilson was featured in the September 2013 Issue of AA&B. He is the vice president of GBG Inc.
