American International Group has tapped a former employee to head the sale of home, auto and life insurance in emerging markets.

Kevin Hogan, who was with AIG from 1984-2008 is back to lead AIG Global Consumer Insurance starting early next month.

In conjunction with Hogan's hire, AIG announced its global life manufacturing will now be a part of Hogan's Global Consumer Insurance.

Hogan was most recently CEO of Global Life for the Zurich Insurance Group, which he joined after his first stint with AIG.

“I am very enthusiastic about the growth potential of our market-leading global PC consumer and life businesses, and believe they will prosper under Kevin's strong leadership,” says CEO Robert H. Benmosche, in a statement. “Putting the manufacturing of the critical products under the same oversight is an important step in our work to become truly one AIG.”

AIG says retirement business and U.S. life will continue to be handled by the AIG Life and Retirement unit.

Hogan assumes the role left vacant by Jeffrey Hayman, who was appointed president of Starr Cos. international insurance operations in January.

Hogan will report to Peter D. Hancock, CEO of AIG Property Casualty.

Before leaving AIG in December 2008—shortly after the insurer was bailed out by the federal government—Hogan was AIG's chief distribution officer for foreign life and retirement services.

In 2005 he was made responsible for AIA China and Nan-Shan. Prior to that, Hogan moved to Beijing in 2003 to take the lead on AIG's partnership with the People's Insurance Co. of China.
