The NFL and more than 4,000 football players who sued the league for concealing the risks of concussions and brain damage were ordered to resolve the case in meditation.

U.S. District Judge Anita Brody, who is overseeing the litigation, met with mediator Layn Phillips in an effort to settle the dispute. The ruling on NFL's motion to dismiss the case will be withheld until Sept. 3, as Brody wants to give the two sides an opportunity to make progress.

Despite players' accusations, the league claims that the suit is inappropriate because player safety issues are governed by the collective bargaining agreements negotiated between the league and players' union. The league also claims it has disclosed information pertaining to brain trauma research.
