Although summer may seem like a time for fun and celebration, homeowners need to be aware of the risks that could result in costly financial inconveniences. Agents can assist their clients by bringing their attention to the risks associated with the season, helping clients avoid filing a common summertime claim.
By following Grange Insurance's five tips, homeowners can still enjoy their summer and stay safe, having the peace of mind that they are preventing everyday summertime mishaps.
|- Prepare your home for "vacation mode" by checking the sump pump, valves on the washing machine and putting electronics on surge protectors. Having a trusted neighbor or family friend check on the home, alerting the local police station of absence and putting a stop on mail delivery can also serve to protect the home from potential damage or intrusion.
- Avoid being the target of theft. Open windows and doors can provide a comforting breeze, but they also can result in an increased risk of theft. Clients should be advised to keep wallets, cell phones, golf clubs, jewelry and other valuables out of sight if they choose to leave their windows and doors ajar.
- Pool and water safety is critical, especially since it can result in liability issues. Pay special attention to swimming children. Other precautions should be taken to avoid drowning, including the installation of a motion-activated alarm and a fence surrounding the pool area.
- Fireworks, though fun to watch, are a leading cause of summer house fires and can result in personal injury. Homeowners should leave the fireworks displays to the professionals. Public displays are often bigger, brighter and are safer for attendees.
- Suggest to homeowner clients to contact you so they are aware of their coverage options before renting boats, cars or vacation homes. In some cases, additional coverage may be needed, but sometimes a homeowner's current auto or homeowner policies may provide effective coverage.
