The Oklahoma Insurance Department (OID) says insurance claims from a series of tornadoes in May have reached 70,782, with insurance payments reaching close to $562 million.

Thus far, claims from the two worst outbreaks have numbered 40,264 for May 19 and 20 and 29,355 for May 30 and 31, respectively. The largest insurance payout has been on homeowners' policies, totaling $437 million for the four-day period with 33,808 claims. Auto is close behind in number of claims at 31,693, with an insurance payout of more than $80 million.

The majority of claims paid so far are attributed to the first round of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, including the massive twister that destroyed Moore, Okla. on May 19. The state Department of Emergency Management says almost 4,000 structures were impacted during the tornadoes and 1,248 were destroyed.
