Personal-lines insurers and others who serve this market are learning that leveraging mobile technology is an increasingly essential component to attracting and retaining customers. Following are some useful apps and devices companies are offering to auto and homeowners insurance shoppers.

Distracted Driving Solution

In April, Esurance introduced a technology solution that can block mobile phone calls, texts, email, Internet, and other smartphone applications while the car is in motion, keeping teens focused on the road, reducing distracted driving, and helping to save lives. Using non-pairing Bluetooth technology from Cellcontrol, the device is engaged when a car is in motion and limits mobile device activity during that time. It remains active in the background and usage is blocked until the car is completely stopped.

Take a Picture, Get a Quote

In 2012, Progressive introduced a new service for its personal auto customers. When searching for a new quote, potential customers can, with the use of their smartphone, simply take a picture of their drivers' license, take another picture of the VIN of the car being purchased, and send the photos via text message to Progressive. Within minutes, you get a quote from the insurer. Progressive's mobile app also lets customers pay bills, report damage and find an agent among other features.

Digital ID Card

Although it is still not legal in most states, Geico is offering through its mobile app a digital insurance ID card that gives customers all the information needed to share with law enforcement or other motorists in the event of an accident. You no longer need to search through the glovebox to find those elusive cards that probably have already expired.

State Farm Pocket Agent

Everything a State Farm customer needs can be found in this app. Customers can view their policy, submit an auto insurance claim, contact a local agent, pay bills using the State Farm Bank mobile bill pay feature, transfer funds from one eligible State Farm Bank account to another, and search for and locate roadside services and auto repair facilities.

Wreck Check

In August of 2012, the NAIC introduced its WreckCheck mobile application that outlines what to do immediately following an auto accident and takes users through a step-by-step process to create their own accident report. Additionally, the app lets users email a completed accident report directly to themselves and their insurance agents. The app is free and available for both iPhone and Android smartphone users.

Vehicle Safety App

Consumers can now receive more vehicle safety information on their car from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's SaferCar.gov website with a free app for iPhones and iPads. The SaferCar app lets users file a vehicle safety complaint, find recall information, and locate car-seat installation help. Consumers also can register their vehicles to be notified by NHTSA if their vehicle is subject to a recall. They can also look up federal crash test ratings and compare them across different makes and models. The app also can be used as a bar code scanner to find vehicle identification numbers.

Digital Locker

Allstate Digital Locker is a mobile application that enables policyholders to create an inventory of items that can be stored on their smartphone. They can organize their personal property by room, category or in item lists; take new pictures, or choose from their existing iPhone or Android library. This gives the policyholder the information they need should they ever need to make a claim. A web version is also available.

Travelers Auto Accident Help

Travelers' mobile app for iPhone and Android guides customers through the steps they need to take to document an accident and submit a claim. It also automatically detects the accident date, time and location, allows customers to take photos, provides an accident report and keeps track of submitted claims and accident reports.
