World Risk Day, a virtual conference that invites risk leaders from around the world to present industry knowledge via webinars, live social media discussions, and an online risk resource center, has announced its speaker lineup.

The second-annual summit occurs on May 14, and centers around the theme “Shattering the Project Myth.” Education sessions will include:

  • Using Risk Modeling, Analysis, and Assessment to Inform Homeland Security Policy and Strategy – Assistant Secretary Alan D. Cohn, US Department of Homeland Security
  • Strategies for successful collaborative risk management with contractors and the supply chain – Rob Halstead, Head of Risk Management, Crossrail
  • What lessons can be learned from the world's Top 100 infrastructure projects – How can knowledge be shared? – Norman Anderson, President & CEO, CG/LA Infrastructure

This year's theme “will lead to thought-provoking debate on the idea that project success can be delivered by the traditional focus on cost and schedule management alone,” said Chris Bell, chief spokesman of Active Risk, a founding supporter of World Risk Day. “To succeed, today's complex projects need to bring risk into the equation.”

World Risk Day supporters say that the huge number of capital projects around the world supporting basic infrastructure in emerging economies to housing global commerce centers mean that it is more imperative than ever to deliver projects on-time and on-budget.

Steve Fowler, Chief Executive of The Institute of Risk Management, said, “Improving how we manage risk in projects is vital if both the private and public sector are going to deliver the infrastructure and business improvements that we need to drive economic development. This is a great topic to bring the global risk community together to share knowledge.”

Other World Risk Day 2013 speakers include professionals from civil-government mining, metals, oil and chemicals power company Bechtel; the New York State Department of Transportation; G31000, the platform for the ISO 31000 risk management standard; and aerospace and defense manufacturer EADS.
