A large storm system brought a variety of weather conditions across the United States this week, killing at least three people and injuring dozens of others, Aon Benfield's Impact Forecasting reports.

Wind damage began in western states on Sunday and Monday, and the system then shifted eastward and brought blizzard conditions and severe weather to the Plains, Midwest and Gulf Coast through Friday. Aon Benfield says the Storm Prediction Center recorded at least 744 storm reports – including 23 reports of tornadoes, 347 reports of hail and 374 reports of damaging winds during the week.

State Farm spokesman Gary Stephensen says the damage in Arkansas as of April 11 was “primarily in very rural areas, although a couple of small communities were hit by what was probably an F1 (not confirmed) tornado.”

He continues, “Thankfully, no population concentrations were impacted, although, certainly several families did suffer a severe impact.”

Aon Benfield reports that at least two tornadoes touched down in Arkansas, including an EF-1 tornado which destroyed a barn in Stone County. A second, and stronger, EF-2 tornado damaged or destroyed at least 41 homes in Van Buren County.

The most significant tornado was recorded in the greater St. Louis, Mo. metropolitan region, Aon Benfield says: an EF-2 twister with estimated winds of 115 to 125 mph.

By Thursday, Aon Benfield says additional severe weather was recorded throughout the Southeast, with multiple tornadoes touching down in Louisiana and Mississippi. There was one tornado-related fatality in Kemper, Miss. Aon Benfield says baseball-sized hail fell near Rockmart, Georgia, while multiple reports of tree and building damage occurred from winds in Huntsville, Alabama. Gulfport, Mississippi also reported large trees downed due to high winds.

Reports indicated that thousands of insurance claims have already been filed across the West, Plains, Midwest, Southeast, and Mid-Atlantic, says Aon Benfield, adding that while it is too early to project a specific loss figure, it is anticipated that insured losses will exceed the $100 million threshold.

Earlier in the week, the storm brought an odd mix of weather to states further west. Aon Benfield says that, in a rare occurrence, hail was falling in locations where it was also snowing in Nebraska. Thunderstorms producing freezing rain moved into eastern Wisconsin overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday morning, coating trees and power lines in heavy ice, and numerous communities from La Crosse to Green Bay reported power outages and downed tree limbs.
