An insurance agent in Mebane, N.C., was sentenced to 9 years in federal prison earlier this month for his part in crop insurance fraud. Larry Rogers, the agent, and his client Richard Enoch, a tobacco farmer, pled guilty to making false statements to the Federal Crop Insurance Corp. Rogers also pleaded to mail and wire fraud and obstructing justice. Enoch received a lighter sentence: one day in prison, six months of house arrest and three years of supervised release.

Enoch was receiving payments from the FCIC for tobacco crop losses between 2006 and 2008 when in actuality he was underreporting production. Rogers helped Enoch and an unspecified number of other farmers conceal segments of their crops. The group drew about $8.4 million in indemnity payments while Rogers was an agent with Triangle Insurance Group Inc. Rogers will pay $8.4 million and Enoch owes $59,000.
