When Jacoby Jones of the Baltimore Ravens returned the second-half kickoff 108 yards in Super Bowl XLVII, some lucky shoppers earned a full cash rebate on purchases made before the National Football League's championship game.
And retail campaign insurer SCA Promotions will be footing the bill—totaling about $290,000.
Leading up to the Super Bowl retailers across the U.S. worked with SCA Promotions to run rebate contests giving away prizes if, for example, a touchdown occurred from a kickoff return. When Jones fielded the second-half kickoff 8 yards deep in the endzone and bolted practically untouched 108 yards for a score, Dallas-based SCA got out its checkbook.
The company says it has covered billions of dollars in prize coverage during its 26 years of operation, and paid out more than $176 million in cash and prizes for sales and consumer product promotions, jackpots and contests.
“Conditional rebate promotions motivate customers to make a purchase because they know there is a chance to win their money back if a specific sports or weather event occurs,” says Chris Hamman, vice president of SCA Promotions, in a statement. “Businesses can offer incredible prizes without the worry and financial risk of rebating all their customer's purchases. These promotions not only absolve them of the financial risk but also generate incredible media coverage.”
SCA Promotions cut Furniture Mart in Fort Morgan, Colo. a check for more than $122,000 for its refund of all home items purchased between Jan. 25-26. Furniture Mart had bet on the opening kickoff/touchdown return.
More than $100,000 in television purchases are being rebated for New Mexico-based appliance store Baillio. Other promotional payoffs include $50,000 to a radio station, $100,000 to the Rose Haven Civic Association and $10,000 to Club O in Harvey, Ill.
