Alaska has the most expensive premium rates at $3.01, while North Dakota offers the least expensive at $1.01, according to a study by the Oregon Dept. of Consumer and Benefits Services.

The biennial study ranked 50 states and Washington, D.C. based on workers’ compensation rates in effect by January 2012. The 2012 median value is $1.88, a drop of 8 percent from the previous study in 2010.

Oregon has conducted these studies on every even-numbered year since 1986 as a performance measure. When the studies began, Oregon had the highest rates in the nation; the latest study places them at 13th least expensive. The current lower rate reflects the state’s workers’ comp system reforms, including improvements in workplace safety and health conditions.
