Twelve insurers and two insurance brokers achieved a score of 100 in the 11th edition of the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index joining a record number of companies extending sexual orientation and gender identity protections in the workplace.

Of the 12 insurance companies, five are primarily property and casualty companies.

Those five companies are:

  • AAA Northern California, Nevada & Utah Insurance Exchange.
  • American International Group.
  • Chubb.
  • The Hartford Financial Services Group Inc.
  • Progressive Corp.

The insurance brokers that scored 100 were Aon Corp. and Marsh & McLennan Companies.

Other insurers on the list that achieved a perfect score were:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida Inc.
  • Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Inc.
  • ING North America Insurance Corp.
  • MetLife Inc.
  • Nationwide
  • Prudential Financial Inc.
  • Sun Life Financial Inc. (U.S.)

Other national P&C insurers on the list that did not score 100, include:

  • State Farm Group (score of 95).
  • Travelers Companies Inc. (score of 90).
  • Allstate Corp. (score of 85).
  • CNA Insurance (score of 85).
  • Zurich North America (score of 65).

To earn a perfect score, companies must adopt policies, benefits and business practices that demonstrate corporate commitment to lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) workers and the community at large.

The HRC says a record 252 businesses achieved a rating of 100 percent in this report. By contrast, HRC notes that in the first year of the survey a decade ago, 13 businesses scored 100.

Invitations to the web-based survey were sent out to 1,848 businesses. Of that number, 530 submitted surveys, and 688 were officially rated. There were 54 new businesses that participated in this year's survey.

HRC says companies that did not submit a survey were rated if they had submitted one in the past and the information remains accurate, or if HRC “has obtained sufficient information to provide an individual rating.”

The LGBT community has growing economic clout, notes HRC, with buying power of $790 billion.
