Insured losses resulting from natural catastrophes in the U.S. and Europe totaled just over $280 million during September, says a new report.
Reinsurance broker Aon Benfield's catastrophe modeler Impact Forecasting says in its September 2012 Global Catastrophe Recap that insurance payouts in the U.S. from September cat events amounted to $125 million.
The worst event in the United States was severe weather from a cold front that caused damage from the Central Plains to New England on the 7th and 8th. The storms produced tornadoes, damaging winds and hail. At least four people were killed, the report says.
Aon Benfield says that the storm system produced more than 35,000 claims and estimated economic damage of more than $225 million.
Other storm events in the United States include flooding in the desert in the Southwest that damaged hundreds of structures, severe weather toward the end of the month that struck the Great Lakes and Plains states, and wildfires in California.
In Europe, the worst event was widespread flooding from heavy rainfall in Spain between the 27th and 29th, killing at least 10 people. The Insurance Compensation Commission says there were at least 19,500 property, commercial and auto claims filed from that event with insurance payouts in excess of $155 million. Total economic losses were well over $200 million.
Severe weather events and earthquakes throughout other parts of the world caused hundreds of deaths and billions of dollars in economic damage.
The worst economic loss occurred in Asia, amounting to $7.5 billion from flooding caused by seasonal monsoonal rains throughout the region.
The report says China was hit the worst, as one six-day stretch of rain resulted in close to $5 billion in economic losses and damage or destruction to more than 100,000 homes. Aon Benfield did not issue insured-loss estimates for this region, which is known to have low insurance penetration.
