COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers challenged members to think about innovation in a general session at its annual conference that deviated from the norm.

Rather than recruit a single speaker to entertain members, CIAB offered up three leaders in the business community, who took 20 minutes each to address the subject of what it takes to be innovative in business and guide a company to higher levels, explains Ken Crerar, president and chief executive officer of the association.

The session, titled TAKE-20, aimed to develop new concepts the likes of which have launched dozens of highly successful companies, says Crerar.

The speakers, Carly Fiorina, former chairman and chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard; Randi Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Zuckerberg Media and former executive at Facebook; and Bill Taylor, co-founder of Fast Company Magazine, gave their take on innovation in a fashion that many executives could relate to, says Crerar.

He says Fiorina spoke about leadership and change, Zuckerberg talked about how her horizons of expectation changed in the fast paced world of technology, and Taylor brought all of that together for developing a world class company.

Due to contractual obligations between the CIAB and the speakers, media wa prohibited from reporting on the speaker sections.

Afterward, attendees met in 45 minute breakout sessions led by one of the speakers to evaluate what they discussed with the intention of insurance leaders developing their own concepts for what will re-shape their business and lead to greater success, Crerar explains.

TAKE-20, Crerar says, is loosely based on TED, a series of online seminars featuring leading thinkers of today offering thought provoking ideas with the hope of launching discussions that might launch innovative solutions in the future.

Crerar says CIAB developed the TAKE-20 concept, introducing it earlier this year at its Employee Benefits Forum. Crerar says the program was very successful and the association decided to introduce it at this year's annual conference.

The purpose of TAKE-20, he says, is to take that discussion to a higher level and help executives develop their own “big ideas.”

“We beat ourselves up too much about being traditionalists,” says Crerar. “We are more innovative than we give ourselves credit for and that is where the new opportunities are.”
