Third-party liability from encountering other vehicles on the road is Quality Distribution Inc.'s biggest exposure, says Mike McDonald, vice president of enterprise risk management at QD.
Its second-greatest issue is Workers' Comp. Besides the usual slip-and-fall and strain exposures that apply to most physically demanding workplaces, truckers also are dealing, of course, with super-sized vehicles (and forklifts during loading) that pose both mechanical risks and emit carbon-monoxide fumes and diesel exhaust.
The third-most severe risks are environmental claims resulting from chemical spills.
After those three?
“From that point on, the risk profile drops off dramatically in terms of severity,” McDonald says. “General Liability is not really an issue for us, since we don't get too many tourists in our loading stations.”
