Independent insurance agents have a lot to offer startup businesses besides just insurance-coverage opportunities, according to one Travelers executive.

Speaking during a symposium on July 18, Joan Woodward, executive vice president of public policy for The Travelers Cos. and president of the Travelers Institute (the carrier's public-policy division), said independent agents could be a major resource of information to which startup entrepreneurs can turn.

With their diverse client base, agents can offer networking opportunities for startup businesses, referring new entrepreneurs to other professional resources, she noted. Additionally, agents, being entrepreneurs themselves, could also offer their own insights into creating a successful business.
