Insurers are becoming cautious about covering flights in and out of Syria, and Aon is advising its clients to contact the broker first before flying to the country.
Syria has been rocked by violence as forces opposed to the government of President Bashar al-Assad have increased their armed struggle against the regime. Attempts to suppress the rebellion have grown more intense and more cities have become subject to violence.
“A UN-mediated ceasefire in April has been violated by both sides and there is little evidence of compliance with the peace plan negotiated by UN and Arab-League envoys,” Aon notes, adding, “The situation appears to be deteriorating.”
Aon says that while insurers “are expressing concern” about flights in and out of the country “they are taking varying stances as to how they are dealing with the risk.”
Most are “requesting that clients considering flights to the country give underwriters prior notice so that the risk implications can be fully considered,” says Aon.
Aon says the insurers will need to know:
- Aircraft type and agreed value.
- Purpose of the flight.
- Time on the ground in Syria.
- Details of security arrangements at the required destination.
- Current conditions in the area.
- Confirmation that all necessary permits will be obtained prior to flight.
“The political situation in Syria complicates the insurance position. We recommend that clients consult with us before travelling to the country to ensure that they have the correct level of coverage and protection,” Aon says.
