Robert H. Benmosche, chief executive officer of American International Group Inc., tells employees he thinks the company is unstoppable.
AIG wants to drive home the same point to the rest of the world, and is using YouTube to do it.
With nine uploaded videos (see two of the videos below the story), AIG is telling viewers the company not only is upholding its promise to repay the massive bailout given to it by the government in 2008 so the company could stay afloat—but that it is thankful.
In a video titled, “Rebuilding Trust, Rebuilding AIG,” an unidentified company employee says, “We owe the American government and the American taxpayers a debt of gratitude. We have to now pay that back, and pay it back with interest.
“People have to hear that message.”
In another video, AIG outlines the history of the bailout, its effort to become smaller and more-focused, and its promise to repay government debt with a profit—a pact AIG says it fulfilled as it converted government assistance to stock, which has been sold at a profit.
“I didn't have any doubt that we would get it done,” says Benmosche in one of the videos. “If we keep doing the right things and doing them fundamentally the right way, we're unstoppable as a company.”
The comment section typically seen under videos posted to YouTube has been disabled.
The videos have been promoted using the hashtag #proud2beAIG on Twitter as the insurance giant looks to stand up tall again.
In late June, an internal memo from Benmosche told employees Chartis, the property and casualty unit of AIG, will go back to using the AIG name in the fall, and SunAmerica Financial Group will be rebranded AIG Life & Retirement.
Other subsidiaries will add AIG to their logos.
AIG did not immediately return a request for comment.
