TOUTED AS AN apocalyptic year, 2012 has seen its share of bizarre end-of-the-world scenario predictions. Perhaps the most popular is the idea of a zombie apocalypse.
So many are concerned about (or enthusiastic over) the idea of a zombie epidemic that companies have begun selling insurance coverage.
“Carriers” such as My Zombie Insurance and ZAICO provide cheap policies and total coverage in the event that the dead rise to terrorize the living.
There are many zombie enthusiasts out there willing to shell out $9.99 for a lifetime policy that will cover up to $100,000 for home, $500,000 for life and $30,000 for vehicles.
But have any of these enthusiasts submitted any claims yet? Yes!
“This one was the funniest: One of our policyholders emailed to say that he was convinced his neighbor’s dog was a zombie,” says June, a representative from My Zombie Insurance.
“He wanted us to reimburse the damage the dog did to his front yard—dead patches of grass from the dog’s ‘extra acidic zombie urine’ and the holes it dug ‘probably to store the parts of people it had ripped off for snacking later on.’”
ZAICO, for its part, says both the frequency and severity of its claims are as low as they can be: It hasn’t received a claim—yet.
“We’re pleased to report that we’ve had no claims against our policies,” says Doug Fellows of ZAICO.
No word on the combined ratios of either company.
