Central to the definition of “legend” is the notion that the fame achieved will be enduring—that these are people whose accomplishments will be remembered for a long, long time.

The figures selected as the industry’s Top 10 Living Legends easily meet that criteria—their contributions to P&C insurance have been epic, monumental—and are sure to be discussed and studied for decades to come. Each profiled visionary has fundamentally changed the way insurance is done, likely forever.

What’s not core to the meaning of legend, however, is the idea that the unforgettable achievements have been necessarily for the common good. Whether it’s the Minotaur from ancient Greece or Jesse James from our more recent history, legends aren’t always loved.

Some on our list may be viewed unfavorably by many; and most of our 10 legends have undoubtedly made an enemy or two along the way—it’s hard to be a titan of business without stepping on some toes.

But like them or loathe them, the immense impact these 10 have had on the industry can’t be denied—and they all have incredibly compelling stories to read about, again and again.

And we know that any such list is subject to dispute and counter-argument. We not only expect it; we welcome it—although we do believe that our choice for Legend No. 1 would probably be as close to unanimous as such an industry-wide vote could be.
