Finding the right insurance carrier to help a company mitigate its Workers' Comp costs is key, says Mary Beth Pittinger, vice president and executive underwriter of Workers' Comp for the Chubb Group of Insurance Cos.

She suggests companies ask their insurance carrier the following questions to make sure they're working in the client's favor:

  • What's the average experience of your Workers' Comp claim adjusters in the jurisdictions they service?
  • What managed-care practices does your company provide?
  • Are cost-containment practices, such as medical-bill review, applied to every bill, every time, for every claim?
  • How does your company charge for the managed-care services it provides?
