Local underwriters are vital to the success of small commercial customer service representatives and account managers, according to a survey by The Hanover Insurance Group and The Pert Group.

Nearly all customer service representatives surveyed—98 percent—rated underwriter access as very important (71 percent) or important (27 percent). The value placed on underwriters might be because 94 percent of carrier representatives said they thought underwriters understood what they did.

The study also found underwriter visits and calls to agents to be the most effective means of communications between customer service representatives and carriers, over emails, company newsletters and Internet postings.
