Louisa County survivors of the 5.8-magnitude earthquake and several aftershocks that rattled the East Coast are set to receive more than $5 million in disaster aid.

On Dec. 5 officials of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) announced the approval of the funds that will aid residents and businesses affected by the August disaster.

Here is a summary through Dec. 4, of state and federal assistance to Louisa County residents and business owners:

  • $5,171,588 for housing, including temporary rental assistance, home repair costs, and assistance toward replacing destroyed homes, and for personal needs
  • $29,185 for other needs assistance to cover essential disaster-related needs, such as medical and dental expenses and lost personal possessions
  • $715,100 from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) in loans to homeowners, renters or business owners

Also as of Dec. 4, the number applicants who have registered with FEMA for some form of disaster assistance totaled to 2,559.
