With the advent of social media comes a new risk-management threat for retailers this holiday season: “flash robs”—mobs that show up with the goal of robbery in mind.

According to a report by Marsh, the organized, quick-moving mobs are made up of groups that plan their events using social-media networks. They descend on businesses and steal merchandise.

Preparation includes vetting policies. While many retail organizations have highly skilled loss-prevention personnel trained to deal with shoplifters, flash-rob gangs pose accelerated risks beyond the typical staffing of location security or loss-prevention personnel, Marsh says.

If such a situation arises, safety of employees, customers, and others is a top concern.

Observe-and-report protocols should include:

  • Targeting cameras at exits to permit full facial shots of suspects.
  • Confirming that camera quality and recordings are adequate.
  • Targeting cameras at high-value merchandise and the cash-office area.
  • Training all employees to protect evidence and advise customers not to touch critical evidence.
  • Safeguarding video recordings, to include a 24-hour period before and after the incident, in the event the case goes to criminal or civil court.
  • Protecting employees and customers from injury.
  • Reminding managers, employees, and customers about safety protocols, including not attempting an apprehension.

After an event, according to Marsh, local management and employees should cooperate with police and local authorities, who may request video recordings.

Approval from the organization's legal department, however, may be needed to release any video. If approval is obtained, duplicate copies should be provided.
