The 51st annual convention of the Florida Surplus Lines Association (FSLA) was held at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, a longtime favorite convention destination for FSLA.
Two of the main purposes of FSLA are to encourage an exchange of information among members and to disseminate educational information for the benefit of members and the betterment of the excess and surplus lines industry. These goals were certainly met at this year's convention, which boasted a record attendance for the second straight year. Attendees from both surplus lines brokers and retail agents, as well as attendees from surplus lines companies from all over the country, along with many associate members, claims adjustors, inspection services, and law firms had an opportunity to mix and exchange ideas.
In two morning business sessions, attendees heard from a variety of speakers. Excellent presentations were given by Cecil Pearce, president of the Florida Insurance Council; Jim Carey, president and CEO of Admiral Insurance Co.; Gary Pullen, executive director of the Florida Surplus Lines Service Office; Douglas Mang of the Mang Law firm, FSLA's general counsel and lobbyist; Jeff Grady, president and CEO of the Florida Association of Insurance Agents; and Lynne Hooker of Miller Insurance Services, Ltd., a fully independent Lloyd's broker and the fifth largest premium provider to Lloyd's.
New officers and directors were elected for 2-year terms. Incoming President Roy Fabry, CPCU, of Kahn-Carlin & Co., Inc., thanked outgoing President Bruce Bowers of Hull & Co. for his many years of service to FSLA as a director and officer.
Ron Gabor, president of Gabor Insurance Services, Inc., made a presentation to the membership requesting support for our PAC fund (SURPAC). Both Gabor and other speakers talked about the need for money to support the political activities of FSLA, which will benefit all of our members.
In addition to the informative business sessions, members had an opportunity to mix and mingle at several convention functions, beginning with a reception Thursday night and a visit to the president's hospitality suite after dinner. On Friday afternoon a golf tournament was held at the famous Boca Raton Resort golf course. Also, three charter fishing boats left the marina for an afternoon of fishing. A large number of attendees attended a chef's culinary demonstration and luncheon at the resort. Another reception was held on Friday evening, followed by dinner.
The overall success of the convention was once again assisted by the generous contributions of 42 of our members for sponsorship of various activities. Our special thanks go out to them.
The next annual convention will be held July 26 to 28, 2012, at the Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort and Golf Club.
