An Oregon man will be serving 65 months in federal prison and paying a large fine for aggravated theft and wire fraud as part of an insurance fraud scheme.

The wrongful actions of Timothy Devon Huntley, Jr., 45, were discovered by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). Investigators discovered multiple suspicious insurance claims with which he was associated, and the case was passed along to the Financial Crimes Unit of the Eugene, Ore. Police Department, the city in which Huntley resided.

Once arrested, one of the things Huntley admitted to involved obtaining insurance policies for recently acquired used vehicles with fake names, addresses, etc., as well as those of real people. Soon after acquiring a policy, Huntley would claim to have damaged a parked car with the vehicle. However, the damaged parked vehicle would also be his, whether insured under a real or fake name. Huntley would then pose as the owner of the damaged car and collect the insurance payout.

Investigation revealed that Huntley had filed over 20 fraudulent claims with at least 11 different insurance companies. The losses these companies suffered totaled $196,854.20—and that is now the amount of money Huntley now owes in restitution.

This was not Huntley's first run-in with the law. He has over 20 prior convictions, according to public records, including at least 10 prior felony convictions for offenses including forgery in the first degree, robbery in the third degree, hindering prosecution, and more.

Huntley had pled guilty to aggravated theft and wire fraud March 15 of this year, and was kept in federal custody until his August 2 sentencing.
