As Hurricane Katia appears set to spin off to sea after bringing tropical-storm conditions to Bermuda, Tropical Storm Maria has formed and is moving west across the Atlantic.
Katia, currently a Category 1 hurricane, is expected to pass between Bermuda and the U.S. East Coast tonight and Thursday. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued a tropical storm warning for Bermuda.
The storm is expected to turn north, then northeast on a path that will take it out to sea well before it threatens the East Coast.
Tropical Storm Maria, meanwhile, formed early today and is currently about 1,305 miles east of the Lesser Antilles. Summing up the heightened level of tropical cyclone activity lately, the NHC begins its public advisory for Maria by noting, “And yet another tropical storm in the Atlantic.”
The extended NHC track forecast shows the storm passing just north of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic on Sunday and Monday, with the cone of uncertainty encompassing both locations.
A report on AccuWeather by Expert Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski states that the storm could begin to impact part of the Lesser Antilles this weekend with squalls and rough surf.
